On Monday, Prime Minister Salem Saleh bin Brek welcomed Patrick Simonnet, the European Union Ambassador to Yemen. The two officials discussed the prospects for bilateral partnership between the Yemeni government and the EU, as well as the current national situation and ongoing efforts to stabilize and normalize conditions in liberated provinces.
During their meeting, they reviewed the political, security, and economic developments in Yemen. They highlighted the successes achieved in reinforcing state authority and enhancing the presence of legitimate institutions. The Prime Minister outlined the government’s initiatives aimed at improving essential services, supporting economic recovery, and alleviating humanitarian burdens on citizens.
Prime Minister bin Brek reaffirmed the government’s commitment to executing urgent priorities under the guidance of President Rashad Alimi. He emphasized the importance of normalizing conditions, enhancing security and stability, and ensuring that weapons remain in the hands of the state. He also stressed the need to create a conducive environment for state institutions to operate effectively, which would positively impact humanitarian conditions and facilitate international aid.
The Prime Minister discussed the government’s coordinated efforts with the Presidential Leadership Council and the Support Coalition to establish security, protect civilians, and uphold the rule of law. He noted the successful transfer of military camps in eastern and southern provinces, which aims to unify military and security decisions on institutional grounds. This approach supports the restoration of state institutions and the end of the Iranian-backed Houthi coup.
He emphasized that the government will not allow chaos to re-emerge or undermine internal unity. Maintaining stability remains a top priority that is non-negotiable. The Prime Minister expressed hope for a more active European role in supporting economic and institutional reforms.
The Prime Minister praised Saudi Arabia for hosting the Southern Dialogue Conference, highlighting its historical and pivotal role in supporting Yemen’s unity and stability. He acknowledged the Kingdom’s sincere efforts to facilitate dialogue among Yemeni factions, which aims to address core issues through peaceful and responsible discussions. This initiative lays the groundwork for a fair and comprehensive settlement that enhances the prospects for lasting peace and stability.
The Prime Minister stated that the Southern issue represents a just cause that cannot be overlooked or resolved through partial or temporary solutions. He called for a comprehensive national approach that avoids exclusionary tactics or imposing realities. He reiterated the government’s commitment to fulfilling its duties to all citizens, maintaining security and stability, and continuing essential services while pursuing reforms.
In response, Ambassador Simonnet confirmed the EU’s ongoing support for the Yemeni government. He reiterated the EU’s commitment to assisting stabilization efforts, building peace, and improving humanitarian conditions. The ambassador also expressed support for the Saudi-sponsored Southern Dialogue and the EU’s readiness to provide assistance to ensure its success.
The meeting concluded with the presence of Dr. Ali Atbosh, Director of the Prime Minister’s Office, and Ambassador Mujib Othman, Advisor to the Prime Minister. The discussions underscored the importance of international cooperation in addressing Yemen’s challenges and fostering a path toward recovery and state-building.
