According to the WHO’s global epidemiological update, Yemen recorded a total of 93,496 new suspected cases of cholera and acute watery diarrhea (AWD) from January 1 to December 28, 2025. The outbreak also resulted in 248 related deaths.

In December alone, the country reported 1,521 new cases across various provinces, including two fatalities.

Global Context

Yemen ranks second globally in cholera cases, trailing Afghanistan, which reported 164,820 cases. Additionally, Yemen holds the sixth position in terms of cholera-related deaths for the same year.

The WHO’s report highlights that the total number of reported cases worldwide during this period reached 614,828 across 33 countries, resulting in 7,598 deaths.

Conclusion

The alarming statistics underscore the urgent need for enhanced public health measures in Yemen. As the country grapples with this health crisis, international support and intervention remain crucial to combat the cholera outbreak effectively.
