Strengthening Maritime Cooperation: Yemeni Coast Guard Meets French and EU Leaders

Djibouti, October 17, 2023 – Today, Major General Khalid Al-Qamali, head of the Yemeni Coast Guard, engaged in discussions with General Sébastien Vallet, the French military commander in Djibouti. The meeting focused on enhancing cooperation and coordination between the two nations in maritime security, anti-smuggling efforts, and the exchange of expertise.

Emphasizing Bilateral Collaboration

During the meeting, which included the directors of the Coast Guard for the Aden Gulf and Red Sea sectors, General Al-Qamali underscored the importance of developing bilateral cooperation. He advocated for intensified training and joint qualification programs. Al-Qamali praised the French government for its support in building Yemen’s maritime and security capabilities. He highlighted the pivotal role of the Yemeni Coast Guard in protecting coastal areas, combating illegal immigration, and addressing organized maritime crime.

Exploring Regional and International Partnerships

In a separate discussion, General Al-Qamali met with Brigadier General Andrea Condamatio, the commander of the European Union’s “EUNAVFOR” operation in Djibouti. They explored avenues for collaboration with regional and international partners active in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden. Their goal is to enhance maritime security, regional stability, and combat transnational threats.

Acknowledging the Role of EUNAVFOR

General Al-Qamali commended the vital role of the EUNAVFOR operation in strengthening maritime security and protecting international shipping routes. He reaffirmed Yemen’s commitment to developing cooperation with the European Union, enhancing operational coordination, information sharing, and building joint capabilities.

Commitment to Maritime Safety

These meetings form part of General Al-Qamali’s ongoing security initiatives aimed at solidifying regional and international cooperation in maritime safety and security. They also reaffirm the Yemeni Coast Guard’s role as an active partner in safeguarding international maritime corridors.
