Minister of Health Discusses Strengthening Cooperation with Gavi and the World Bank

In a significant meeting held today in the temporary capital of Aden, Dr. Qassem Baheeb, the Minister of Public Health and Population, engaged with Anne Cronin, the Gavi Global Vaccine Alliance Director for Yemen. The discussion focused on enhancing technical cooperation and strategic partnerships to support vaccination programs and improve the health system’s capabilities.

Gavi’s Role in Yemen

During the meeting, both parties reviewed Gavi’s interventions in Yemen. These initiatives include the provision of essential and routine vaccines, as well as supplementary vaccines aimed at epidemic response. Additionally, Gavi supports medical incinerators for the safe disposal of medical waste.

Minister Baheeb emphasized the importance of continued support for vaccination efforts. He highlighted that immunization remains a critical component of primary healthcare, essential for preventing the resurgence of previously controlled diseases.

Strategic Planning for Long-Term Health Solutions

The Minister called for a shift from short-term responses to long-term strategic planning. He proposed strengthening the cold chain, enhancing the efficiency of healthcare workers, and improving tracking mechanisms to ensure vaccines reach all governorates, especially the most vulnerable areas.

Gavi’s Commitment to Yemen

In response, Cronin reaffirmed Gavi’s commitment to continuing vaccine support for Yemen. She acknowledged the ongoing challenges in health and humanitarian sectors and emphasized the need to address funding and supply gaps.

Collaboration with the World Bank

In a related discussion, Minister Baheeb met with a World Bank team to explore health interventions implemented through the World Health Organization. They discussed ways to enhance support for health facilities, units, and hospitals.

Minister Baheeb praised the World Bank’s assistance in providing essential services, primary care, and emergency support. He outlined the health sector’s priorities and the vision to be presented at the upcoming donor conference, which includes restructuring and increasing funding.

Opportunities for Future Support

The World Bank team presented an overview of current interventions and opportunities to bolster support for the health sector in the coming phase. This collaboration aims to ensure a more resilient healthcare system in Yemen.

This meeting marks a crucial step in strengthening Yemen’s health infrastructure and ensuring that essential health services remain accessible to all citizens.
