On Wednesday, President Dr. Rashad Mohammed Alimi, head of the Presidential Leadership Council, welcomed French Ambassador Catherine Grameau. The meeting focused on recent local developments, particularly in the eastern provinces, and the international community’s role in supporting Saudi-led efforts for peace and stability in Hadramout and Al-Mahra.
During the meeting, President Alimi praised France’s ongoing support for the Presidential Leadership Council and the Yemeni government. He highlighted France’s commitment to Yemen’s unity and territorial integrity, as reflected in the United Nations Security Council’s statement released on Tuesday.
President Alimi expressed his deep appreciation for the historical relationship between Yemen and France. He emphasized France’s steadfast support for the Yemeni people and their political leadership in international forums. He expressed confidence that this support would continue in alignment with international law and the United Nations Charter.
The discussion also covered recent developments in Yemen and the intertwined threats facing national efforts to counter the Iranian-backed Houthi militia’s coup. President Alimi criticized unilateral actions taken by the Southern Transitional Council, which he argued deviated from constitutional frameworks and transitional agreements, including the power transfer declaration and the Riyadh Agreement.
The President asserted that the Yemeni state would fulfill its legal responsibilities. He urged the international community to adopt a clearer stance in supporting Yemen’s constitutional and legal measures. He commended UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres for his insightful description of the current crisis.
President Alimi warned that any internal disintegration would empower extremist groups and create security vacuums along crucial international shipping routes. He stressed that the security of the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden hinges on the stability of the Yemeni state, rather than legitimizing parallel entities.
The President clarified that the restraint shown by the leadership over the past years was not a sign of weakness but a national responsibility. He reaffirmed the commitment to avoid escalating violence and worsening the suffering of the Yemeni people.
President Alimi reiterated the Council’s commitment to a fair resolution of the Southern issue, in accordance with the will of the people. He expressed openness to peace, partnerships, and equitable political solutions. However, he firmly rejected any attempts to dismantle the state or reward parties that undermine transitional governance.
Dr. Yahya Al-Shaibi, Director of the Presidential Office, also attended the meeting.
