The Ministry of Information and the 14 October Foundation for Press, Printing, and Publishing have expressed deep sorrow over the passing of renowned writer and journalist Salem Al-Faras. He passed away while receiving treatment in India after a prolonged battle with illness.
In their official statement, the organizations praised Al-Faras for his humility, generosity, and unwavering commitment to his principles. Known for his constant smile and genuine patriotism, he addressed national concerns through his writings. Al-Faras championed freedom of thought, expression, and creativity, serving as a role model throughout his professional and personal life.
Al-Faras began his journalism career early, joining the 14 October newspaper in 1981. Over the course of more than four decades, he wrote a regular weekly column and eventually became the chief editor of the publication until his death. In 1990, he founded the Association for the Protection of Antiquities and Green Spaces, the first Yemeni organization dedicated to preserving cultural and environmental heritage. This initiative showcased his cultural and developmental awareness. Additionally, he launched the monthly newspaper “Al-Muheet,” where he served as both publisher and editor-in-chief, aiming to elevate cultural awareness within the community.
The statement highlighted the significant loss felt by the literary community and society at large with Al-Faras’s passing. He was an active member of the Yemeni Writers’ Union and contributed to various literary genres, including poetry, short stories, and novels. His works, such as the short story “Searching for Zarnuq” and the novel “Sarb Al-Mahamil,” received acclaim from both critics and readers. Al-Faras was an engaged intellectual who used his writing to address pressing social issues, known for his bold and responsible critique of public affairs.
The Ministry of Information and the 14 October Foundation extended their heartfelt condolences to Al-Faras’s family, friends, and the broader journalistic and literary communities. They prayed for his eternal peace and asked for strength for his loved ones during this difficult time. “Indeed, we belong to Allah, and indeed, to Him we shall return.”
