Gulf Cooperation Council and Japan Conclude Second Round of Free Trade Agreement Negotiations

The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and Japan wrapped up their second round of negotiations for a free trade agreement in Tokyo on Thursday. This four-day meeting aimed to strengthen economic ties between the two regions.

Key Participants in the Negotiations

The Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported that the negotiations featured prominent figures, including Japan’s Chief Negotiator, Ambassador for International Economic Affairs Katsuhiro Takahashi. Representatives from various relevant ministries and the GCC’s Chief Negotiator, Raja Al-Marzouqi, also attended, along with delegates from member states.

Active Discussions on Trade Provisions

During the negotiations, both parties engaged in lively discussions. They focused on several critical areas, including negotiation methods, general provisions, goods trade, rules of origin, services trade, customs procedures, trade facilitation, investment, and intellectual property rights. These discussions aimed to lay a solid foundation for future economic collaboration.

Next Steps in the Negotiation Process

The Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs noted that both sides agreed to coordinate the timing of the third round of negotiations through diplomatic channels. This agreement reflects a commitment to advancing the free trade agreement and enhancing economic cooperation between Japan and the GCC.

In summary, the conclusion of this round marks a significant step toward establishing a robust economic partnership, with both parties eager to continue their discussions in the near future.
