On Thursday, Dr. Abdul Salam Hamid, the Minister of Transport, visited the old Hawlaf Port in Socotra Archipelago. His inspection focused on the administrative building, docks, and port facilities.
Following the inspection, Minister Hamid held a meeting with the port’s leadership and staff. During this session, he listened to a detailed presentation from the port manager, Mohammed Salem. The discussion covered the port’s current activities and included employee proposals for enhancing operations. Additionally, they addressed the port’s workforce needs and the resources required to improve performance.
Minister Hamid emphasized the ministry’s commitment to enhancing the port’s capabilities. He stated that the ministry aims to meet the needs of the Socotra Archipelago residents. He directed the Arabian Sea Ports Corporation in Hadramout, which oversees the port’s operations, to provide the necessary resources to ensure continuous development and functionality.
The minister highlighted that this project would allow large vessels to dock year-round, fulfilling the province’s demand for goods and services. He noted that this initiative would boost maritime and commercial activities in the region. Furthermore, he praised the efforts of Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates in constructing the port’s administrative building and expanding the docks. These improvements have enabled the port to accommodate a greater number of wooden ships and ferries.
The ongoing development at Socotra Port represents a significant step toward improving maritime infrastructure in the region. With the support of international partners and a clear commitment from the Ministry of Transport, the port is set to enhance its role in serving the local community effectively.
