A recent report from the Eye Organization for Human Rights reveals the tragic death of a young man from Al-Bayda Governorate, who suffered severe torture in a prison run by the Iranian-backed Houthi militia in the capital, Sana’a.
The organization issued a statement today, which was shared with the Yemeni News Agency (Saba). The victim, 19-year-old Issa Mohammed Ali Al-Masoudi, hailed from the Al-Masoud area in the Quraishiyah district of Al-Bayda. He passed away on Thursday evening due to serious injuries sustained while in custody.
According to the statement, Al-Masoudi was transferred to the intensive care unit of a hospital in Sana’a in critical condition. Unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries days after his admission. The organization emphasized that his death resulted from the severe torture he endured in prison.
The victim’s family reported that the militia prevented their son from receiving necessary medical treatment in the hospital. This pattern of neglect reflects a troubling trend of deliberate medical oversight aimed at concealing serious violations against civilians detained by the militia.
The Eye Organization highlighted that the Houthi militia continues to detain approximately 39 civilians from the Al-Masoud area. Additionally, they have held around 15 corpses for over a year following an attack that resulted in civilian casualties.
In its statement, the Eye Organization held the Houthi leadership fully accountable for the torture and various violations faced by civilian detainees. These actions represent a blatant disregard for humanitarian norms and international humanitarian law.
This tragic incident underscores the urgent need for accountability and reform in the treatment of detainees in conflict zones. The international community must take notice and act to protect human rights in Yemen.
