Minister Emphasizes Importance of Biodiversity for Sustainable Development

Diverse Ecosystems as National Wealth

Minister of Water and Environment, Engineer Tawfiq Al-Sharjabi, highlighted the significance of biodiversity as a true national treasure. Yemen boasts a variety of ecosystems, along with rich plant, animal, and marine resources. These elements serve as a crucial foundation for food security, provide vital livelihoods, and support sustainable development.

Call for Conservation Efforts

Al-Sharjabi stressed the urgent need to preserve these resources for future generations. He noted that the preparation of the seventh national biodiversity report reflects the current state of biodiversity in Yemen. This report evaluates the progress made in fulfilling national and international commitments while addressing existing challenges and opportunities to enhance the protection and sustainable management of natural resources.

Workshop Collaboration with UNDP

This statement came during the conclusion of a workshop organized by the Ministry in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). The event included representatives from relevant government agencies, civil society organizations, and the private sector. The workshop focused on preparing and discussing the seventh national biodiversity report, funded by the Global Environment Facility.

Opportunity for Knowledge Exchange

Al-Sharjabi explained that the workshop provided a vital opportunity for exchanging opinions and experiences. Participants reviewed accomplishments and offered feedback and recommendations to create a comprehensive national report. This report aims to accurately reflect the current situation and enhance the ability of stakeholders to make informed decisions based on knowledge and science.

UNDP Resident Representative Commends Efforts

Zina Ahmed, the UNDP Resident Representative, praised the efforts of the Ministry of Water and Environment, the national team, technical committees, and experts involved in preparing the report. She emphasized that the report serves as a key tool for the global review of progress in implementing the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.

This collaborative effort underscores the commitment to protecting biodiversity and promoting sustainable development in Yemen.
