Protest in London Calls for Lifting the Siege on Taiz

A protest organized by the Yemeni Communities Alliance in the United Kingdom and Ireland, in collaboration with the Global Yemen Solidarity Campaign, demanded the lifting of the siege imposed by the Houthi militia on the city of Taiz. The demonstrators called for the safe and permanent opening of roads, an end to attacks on civilians, and the unhindered delivery of humanitarian aid.

Urging Action from the UK Government

Participants in the protest, which included members of the Yemeni community, friends of Yemen, and human rights advocates, urged the British government and Parliament to take practical steps beyond mere statements of condemnation. They emphasized the need to seriously consider designating the Houthi militia as a terrorist organization under British law and to hold accountable those responsible for violations and crimes against civilians.

Supporting the Yemeni Government

The statement issued during the protest highlighted the importance of supporting the internationally recognized Yemeni government. It called for backing its political, diplomatic, and economic efforts to restore state institutions and establish the rule of law across the nation, while also preserving Yemen’s unity and independence.

Enhancing Humanitarian and Development Aid

The participants urged the United Kingdom to increase humanitarian and developmental support for Yemen. They called for contributions to hospitals and the education, water, and food security sectors, as well as efforts to rehabilitate infrastructure and improve essential services.

Addressing the Humanitarian Crisis in Taiz

The statement emphasized that the siege of Taiz represents a humanitarian and rights issue that extends beyond road closures. It pointed out the difficulties residents face in accessing hospitals, schools, and markets, along with rising living costs due to the ongoing siege and continuous violations committed by the Houthi militia.

Demanding Basic Rights for the Yemeni People

Protesters stressed that the Yemeni people do not seek privileges but rather their fundamental rights to security, freedom, and justice. They called on the international community to take more effective measures to end the suffering of civilians and support the restoration of the Yemeni state, achieving security and stability.
