Minister of Electricity Discusses U.S. Support for Yemen’s Energy Sector

Meeting Highlights Cooperation Efforts

Today, Minister of Electricity and Energy, Engineer Adnan Al-Kaf, met with U.S. Ambassador to Yemen, Stephen Fagin, to discuss the collaborative relationship between the two nations. The focus of their conversation centered on enhancing American support for Yemen’s electricity sector.

Challenges Facing the Electricity Sector

During the meeting, Minister Al-Kaf outlined the significant challenges currently confronting the electricity sector. He emphasized the difficult economic conditions in Yemen and their adverse effects on electricity services. A critical issue is the shortage of fuel, which has arisen due to the halt in oil exports following Houthi attacks on export ports.

Al-Kaf explained that the decline in service quality stems from fuel shortages and reliance on outdated, costly power plants. He noted that implementing smart prepaid meters could help optimize electricity consumption and reduce losses, thereby supporting an increase in generation capacity.

Vision for Addressing the Crisis

The minister shared the ministry’s vision for tackling the ongoing crisis. This plan focuses on expanding the construction of modern, efficient power generation stations to meet rising demand and improve service quality. He expressed confidence in the ministry’s clear strategy to revitalize the electricity sector and highlighted the importance of increased support for energy projects in fostering recovery and development.

U.S. Commitment to Yemen’s Stability

In response, Ambassador Fagin reaffirmed the United States’ commitment to Yemen. He emphasized the U.S. dedication to enhancing security and stability in the region while continuing to provide developmental support. Fagin commended the leadership of the Ministry of Electricity for their efforts amid ongoing challenges and limited resources.

This meeting marks a significant step in strengthening the partnership between Yemen and the United States, particularly in the critical area of energy infrastructure.
