A recent joint assessment by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the National Council for Scientific Research in Lebanon estimates that the direct damage to buildings in Southern Lebanon due to Israeli aggression amounts to approximately $1.38 billion. This evaluation took place at the end of April.
The assessment reveals that 11,095 buildings were completely destroyed, affecting 17,891 housing units. Additionally, 2,242 buildings suffered partial damage, impacting 5,219 housing units. Furthermore, 9,311 buildings experienced minor damage, which affected 18,282 housing units.
This level of destruction indicates an unprecedented targeting of residential infrastructure in the region. The United Nations has warned of worsening humanitarian conditions, emphasizing the urgent need for rapid assessments and reconstruction efforts. This warning comes as citizens continue to face the ongoing effects of the aggression, increasing risks to civilian lives.
The Lebanese government, in collaboration with international organizations, aims to develop urgent recovery and reconstruction plans. These plans will include detailed damage assessments and prioritization of rebuilding efforts. Stakeholders hope to secure international support to improve humanitarian conditions and address the needs of affected citizens.
