Sheikh Hassan Muhammad Abdullah Sarour Al-Sharif, a prominent tribal leader from the Al-Ghayl district in Al-Jawf governorate, has officially announced his complete defection from the Houthi militia. In a recent video statement, he expressed his deep dissatisfaction with the rampant corruption and violations taking place in Al-Jawf and other areas under Houthi control.
In his statement, Sheikh Al-Sharif declared his disassociation from the Houthi group, stating that they “neither upheld justice nor defeated falsehood, nor defended the oppressed, nor restrained the oppressor.” He emphasized that the militia lacks any genuine project aimed at protecting the lives and rights of citizens. Instead, he accused its leaders of exploiting their power for personal gain.
The defected sheikh criticized the militia’s slogans and the speeches of its leader, describing them as “empty rhetoric” that fails to translate into real action. He pointed out that the wealth of Al-Jawf is being plundered while its residents are deprived of their rightful share. Furthermore, he highlighted the militia’s practices of exclusion and marginalization against the people of Al-Jawf.
Sheikh Al-Sharif directed a pointed message to Houthi leaders, asking, “Where are the promises of justice and the projects you boast about day and night? All we have witnessed is killing, destruction, oppression, misery, humiliation, and deprivation.”
This defection comes amid escalating public anger in Al-Jawf, a region characterized by its tribal nature. The ongoing violations committed by the militia against citizens have led to increasing tribal resistance against the group’s policies.
Sheikh Al-Sharif’s bold stance reflects a growing sentiment among the people of Al-Jawf, who are increasingly rejecting the Houthi militia’s oppressive tactics. As the situation develops, it remains to be seen how this defection will influence the broader dynamics within the region.
