Vendors and street merchants reject illegal Houthi taxes at the Jibla intersection, protesting against unjust financial demands.

Local Vendors Resist Houthi Illegal Levies in Jableh

Local sources in Ibb Governorate report that street vendors and cart operators at the Jableh intersection have stood firm against a recent campaign by the Houthi militia. The militia attempted to coerce them into paying illegal fees.

Vendors Stand United Against Threats

According to eyewitness accounts, vendors refused to pay any amounts to the militia, despite facing threats and pressure from its members. The militia demanded that each vendor pay 5,000 riyals in outdated currency. This demand sparked widespread rejection among the vendors.

Abduction Attempts Fail to Intimidate

In a desperate move, the militia resorted to abducting 12 individuals in an effort to intimidate others into compliance. However, the street vendors continued to resist the imposed levies, demonstrating their determination to stand against the unlawful demands.

Activist Voices Opposition

In this context, activist Abu Haidar Al-Awlaki, a prominent voice from Ibb on social media, sharply criticized the militia’s actions. In a video statement, he asserted that the Houthi authority lacks legality and legitimacy. He emphasized that the country is in a state of war, which necessitates addressing the situation rather than imposing taxes on citizens.

The ongoing resistance by local vendors highlights the community’s resilience against unlawful practices. As tensions rise, the situation in Ibb remains a focal point for discussions on governance and citizen rights in Yemen.
