Turkey’s Parliament Enacts Law to Regulate Minors’ Access to Social Media

Turkey’s Parliament Enacts New Digital Regulation Law

In a significant move to enhance online safety, Turkey’s Parliament has recently approved legislation that imposes stringent restrictions on the use of social media platforms by minors. This new law is designed to protect children from various digital dangers by instituting identity verification processes and improving content oversight across these platforms.

Restrictions for Minors Under 15

The legislation explicitly prohibits children under the age of 15 from gaining access to social media networks. Nevertheless, it allows for the development of safe online services specifically designed for older children, provided they meet established safety guidelines. These measures are intended to safeguard young users from exposure to harmful content while they navigate the digital landscape.

Enhanced Parental Controls and Digital Gaming Oversight

Furthermore, the new law mandates social media platforms to implement robust parental control tools. These tools are expected to include:

  • Daily usage limits to monitor time spent online.
  • Requirements for parental consent for any paid services.

These provisions empower parents to oversee their children’s online activities, thereby bolstering digital safety within the community.

In addition to social media restrictions, the law also applies to digital gaming platforms. It requires these platforms to eliminate any content that does not have appropriate age classifications in line with established standards. This comprehensive approach is part of Ankara’s broader initiative to reduce digital risks for minors and cultivate a safer online environment in Turkey.

Through this legislation, Turkey’s Parliament underscores its commitment to protecting children from potential online threats, highlighting the critical importance of digital security in the modern age.
