Minister of Water and Environment Discusses Collaboration with World Bank Team in Aden

In a significant meeting held today in Aden, Minister of Water and Environment, Engineer Tawfiq Al-Sharjabi, engaged with a visiting World Bank team led by Miskrim Berhani, the Regional Director for Agriculture, Water, and Environment in North Africa and the Middle East. The discussions focused on enhancing joint cooperation in the fields of water, sanitation, and environmental management, as well as exploring future collaboration opportunities.

Current Projects and Challenges

The meeting included ministry officials, specialists in water resource management, and World Bank program experts. Participants reviewed the progress of ongoing projects funded by the World Bank in water and sanitation. They assessed the level of achievement and addressed critical issues such as water scarcity, energy security, and the need for reliable data to support upcoming projects. The discussions highlighted the increasing demand for sustainable development interventions.

Strengthening Government and World Bank Relations

Minister Al-Sharjabi praised the strong relationship between the Yemeni government and the World Bank, emphasizing the bank’s role as a key partner in supporting the country’s development efforts, particularly in the water sector. He outlined the ministry’s strategies to tackle current challenges and optimize available opportunities. The minister stressed the importance of improving water services for citizens, especially in light of limited resources. He proposed utilizing unconventional water sources, such as seawater desalination, and alternative energy solutions to address water and energy issues.

Future Development Needs

During the meeting, Minister Al-Sharjabi presented the most pressing needs and developmental projects in water and sanitation. He underscored that the upcoming recovery phase requires assistance from partners to support government plans and the Ministry of Water and Environment’s initiatives. Key areas for support include strengthening water institutions, enhancing capacity building, and updating information systems.

World Bank’s Commitment to Water Issues in Yemen

In response, Miskrim Berhani reaffirmed the World Bank’s commitment to prioritizing water issues in Yemen. She explained that a specialized team is preparing a series of projects focused on information systems and future initiatives tailored to sector needs. Additionally, she highlighted the importance of coordinating efforts with the Green Climate Fund to mobilize necessary funding for sustainable development projects in Yemen.

This meeting marks a crucial step towards addressing Yemen’s pressing water and environmental challenges, fostering collaboration between the government and international partners to ensure a sustainable future for the country.
