In a significant meeting held today in Aden, Minister of Water and Environment, Engineer Tawfiq Al-Sharjabi, engaged with Salio Torsi, the Head of Climate Change, Water, Environment, and Energy Sector at the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), along with the Project Manager for Integrated Water Resources Management. The discussion focused on the Integrated Water Resources Management Project currently underway in the Tuban Delta Basin.
The meeting highlighted the project’s implementation in four districts across the Taiz and Lahij governorates. The officials reviewed the hydrological study associated with the project, emphasizing its role in promoting sustainable livelihoods for local communities. The project aims to enhance water management practices, particularly in agricultural sectors, by improving rainwater harvesting techniques in the basin.
Minister Al-Sharjabi underscored the critical partnership between the Ministry of Water and Environment and the UNDP. He stressed that the Integrated Water Resources Management Project serves the community by addressing essential water needs, particularly for agriculture. Furthermore, he insisted that the study must consider issues related to surface and groundwater storage, as well as vulnerable areas susceptible to flooding and runoff.
In response, the UNDP representative expressed gratitude for the leadership of the Ministry of Water and Environment. He acknowledged the ministry’s ongoing cooperation in executing the programme’s plans and initiatives in Yemen. This collaboration is vital for the successful implementation of water management strategies that benefit the local population.
The discussions today mark a crucial step towards enhancing water resource management in Yemen. By focusing on sustainable practices and community needs, the Integrated Water Resources Management Project aims to create a lasting impact on the region’s agricultural and environmental landscape.
