Houthi Actions Threaten Economic Stability in Yemen

Minister of Information Highlights Economic Crisis

Minister of Information Muammar Al-Eryani has condemned the recent actions of Houthi militias, which have eliminated the commercial registrations and licenses of over 4,225 local and international agencies in one sweeping move. He described this act as a systematic economic massacre targeting the remaining private sector in Houthi-controlled areas. This decision directly exacerbates the ongoing economic and living crises in Yemen.

Targeting the Private Sector

In a press statement, Al-Eryani emphasized that this move aligns with a clear agenda pursued by the Houthis since their coup. The militias aim to reshape the commercial agency market to suit their interests. By sidelining legitimate agents under flimsy pretexts, they open the door for their own companies and dubious networks to monopolize exclusive agencies. This strategy represents a blatant continuation of their policy of confiscation and disruption of the national economy.

Destruction of Established Businesses

Al-Eryani pointed out that these actions form part of a calculated plan to eliminate major commercial houses and established traders. The Houthis intend to replace them with fictitious entities loyal to their cause, thereby establishing a parallel economy based on monopolization, extortion, and money laundering within closed networks. This model serves their agenda and fuels their cross-border terrorist activities.

Impact on Employment and Livelihoods

The minister noted that these practices have not only led to control over the market but have also paralyzed the private sector. Many traders have faced bankruptcy, and numerous companies and factories have shut down. This situation has forced capital to flee abroad, directly impacting citizens’ livelihoods. Tens of thousands of workers have lost their sources of income, marking one of the most dangerous waves of organized economic destruction in Yemen.

Call to Action for Affected Businesses

Al-Eryani reiterated that these measures lack any legal or legitimate basis and represent a serious escalation in undermining the national economy. He urged all affected businesses and entrepreneurs to leave Houthi-controlled areas and relocate their operations to liberated regions. These areas offer a safer legal environment and genuine guarantees for conducting business free from confiscation and extortion.

In conclusion, the actions of the Houthi militias pose a significant threat to Yemen’s economic stability, impacting countless lives and businesses. The international community must take note of this ongoing crisis and support efforts to restore economic integrity in the region.
