Yemen’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, Dr. Afrah Al-Zouba, engaged in a phone call with Bahrain’s Foreign Minister, Dr. Abdullatif Al-Zayani, to discuss the evolving situation in Yemen. The conversation focused on the military escalation by the Houthi militia along the western coast and its implications for the security of Bab al-Mandab and international navigation.
Dr. Al-Zouba emphasized that the Houthi escalation on the western coast aligns with a plan that supports Iranian interests. This strategy aims to transform Yemen and its coastal areas into tools for exerting pressure on regional countries and extorting global trade and energy supplies. Consequently, this expands the threat from the Strait of Hormuz to the southern entrance of the Red Sea.
The minister underscored Yemen’s right and responsibility to protect its citizens and restore sovereignty over its entire territory and territorial waters. She asserted that safeguarding Bab al-Mandab is crucial for preserving Yemen’s sovereignty and represents a shared interest for both the region and the world.
Dr. Al-Zouba highlighted the importance of rallying Arab and international support that translates condemnations into actionable measures. Such actions would empower the Yemeni government to protect its coasts, ports, and islands, halt the flow of Iranian weapons, funding, and expertise to the militia, implement Security Council resolutions, and hold violators and their supporters accountable.
The phone call also addressed bilateral relations and continued discussions from Dr. Al-Zouba’s recent visit to Manama, aimed at strengthening coordination and cooperation between the two countries.
For his part, Minister Al-Zayani reaffirmed Bahrain’s commitment to monitoring developments in Yemen. He reiterated his country’s support for the Yemeni government, Yemen’s unity, and its sovereignty. He condemned the Houthi escalation, which has caused humanitarian suffering and undermined security and stability. Al-Zayani stressed that the Houthi threat to Yemen’s security, regional stability, and navigation in the Red Sea and Bab al-Mandab necessitates a firm international response.
