The American Center for Justice (ACJ) has expressed strong support for the recent decision made by Dr. Rashad Alimi, the head of Yemen’s Presidential Leadership Council. This decision mandates the closure of secret prisons established by the United Arab Emirates and managed by the Southern Transitional Council in the provinces of Aden, Lahij, and Al-Dhale. Additionally, it calls for the release of detainees held in these facilities.
The ACJ described this decision as a “long-awaited official acknowledgment” of an illegal detention system that has operated outside the judicial framework for years. The center emphasized that this move represents a crucial first step toward ending widespread human rights violations, including arbitrary detention, enforced disappearances, and torture.
The statement highlighted that such practices are strictly prohibited under Yemen’s constitution and international agreements to which Yemen is a party. These include the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, the Convention Against Torture, and the International Convention for the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearance.
The ACJ urged the need for independent investigations into these violations. It stressed the importance of holding accountable those responsible and taking serious legal measures to prevent future occurrences.
