The King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center’s “Masam” project has made significant strides in clearing Yemen of landmines. Since the beginning of August, the project has successfully removed 2,024 landmines, unexploded ordnance, and improvised explosive devices (IEDs) planted by Houthi militias.
According to a statement from the Masam operations room, the total number of items cleared from August 1 to August 8 includes 1,944 unexploded munitions and 77 anti-tank mines. During this period, teams managed to clear 398,337 square meters of Yemeni land, enhancing safety in residential and agricultural areas previously at risk.
Osama Al-Qusaibi, the project director for Masam, reported that since its inception until August 8, the teams have removed a total of 509,612 explosive materials. This figure includes landmines, unexploded ordnance, and IEDs.
Al-Qusaibi detailed that the cleared materials comprise 347,498 unexploded munitions, 8,250 IEDs, 147,034 anti-tank mines, and 6,830 anti-personnel mines.
Al-Qusaibi emphasized that these efforts align with the humanitarian mission of the Masam project. The primary goal is to protect lives and restore normalcy in areas affected by landmines, which pose one of the greatest threats to civilians in Yemen.
Since its launch, the engineering teams have cleared over 69,093,218 square meters of Yemeni land. Al-Qusaibi reassured the public that efforts will continue to secure more areas, facilitating opportunities for agriculture, housing, and development.
