Prime Minister Reviews Measures to Control Prices of Fish and Agricultural Products

On Sunday, Prime Minister Salem Saleh bin Brek met with Minister of Agriculture, Irrigation, and Fisheries, Salem Al-Saqtri, to discuss the government’s efforts to monitor the prices of fish and agricultural products. This meeting comes in light of a noticeable improvement in the exchange rate of the national currency, which the government aims to reflect directly in the lives of citizens.

Government Efforts to Reduce Prices

During the meeting, the Prime Minister received a detailed report from Minister Al-Saqtri regarding the ministry’s initiatives to lower prices for fish, vegetables, fruits, meat, poultry, and eggs. The minister emphasized the importance of issuing semi-daily price updates from all fishing authorities in coastal provinces. These updates will align with market prices and focus on regulating retail prices to match the actual costs observed in wholesale auctions, particularly in light of the positive changes in the national currency’s exchange rate.

Prioritizing Citizens’ Welfare

Prime Minister bin Brek stressed that improving citizens’ living conditions and reducing the prices of essential goods, especially fish, vegetables, fruits, and meat, remains a top priority. He clarified that stabilizing the exchange rate is not an end goal but a means to alleviate living costs and deter any monopolistic practices or price manipulation.

Enhancing Market Oversight

The Prime Minister directed an increase in field inspections by monitoring teams and called for enhanced coordination with the Ministry of Industry and Trade, local authorities, commercial chambers, and fishermen’s and farmers’ associations. This collaboration aims to regulate markets, balance the interests of producers and consumers, and safeguard food security. He reiterated the government’s commitment to combat speculation and monopolies through all legal means, ensuring that no essential commodity remains subject to greed or manipulation. The Prime Minister highlighted the need for collective responsibility among all parties to ensure sustainable economic improvement that directly benefits citizens.

Minister’s Commitment to Price Regulation

In response, Minister Al-Saqtri affirmed the ministry’s commitment to the Prime Minister’s directives. He emphasized the importance of coordinating with the Ministry of Industry and Trade and local authorities in Aden and liberated provinces to regulate prices for fish, vegetables, fruits, meat, and poultry. The minister also outlined the ministry’s plans to monitor markets, facilitate the marketing and distribution of local products, and support initiatives aimed at developing the agriculture and fisheries sectors to provide food at reasonable prices.

Conclusion

The meeting concluded with the presence of Dr. Ali Atbush, Director of the Prime Minister’s Office, underscoring the government’s unified approach to addressing economic challenges and ensuring the well-being of its citizens.
