President Alimi Meets South Korean Ambassador to Discuss Bilateral Relations

On Sunday, President Dr. Rashad Mohammed Alimi, head of the Presidential Leadership Council, welcomed South Korean Ambassador Do Bong-kai. The meeting focused on recent developments in Yemen and opportunities to strengthen bilateral relations between the two countries.

Celebrating 40 Years of Diplomatic Relations

President Alimi praised the exceptional Yemeni-Korean relations as they mark their 40th anniversary. He expressed gratitude for South Korea’s support of the Yemeni government and its people. The President highlighted South Korea’s active role as a temporary member of the United Nations Security Council and its leadership of the sanctions committee concerning Yemen. He emphasized the need to include a military expert in this committee.

Addressing Humanitarian Challenges

During the meeting, President Alimi briefed Ambassador Do on the current national situation. He outlined the government’s efforts to alleviate the humanitarian crisis exacerbated by Houthi militia attacks on oil facilities and shipping vessels. The President called for international support to build on the recent improvements in the national currency, aiming for a more sustainable recovery.

Expanding Cooperation in Key Sectors

President Alimi expressed his desire for greater partnership with South Korea, particularly in reconstruction, renewable energy, water management, port rehabilitation, and public works. He acknowledged the role of the Saudi-led coalition in supporting Yemen’s commitments and mitigating the humanitarian crisis caused by Houthi militias, backed by the Iranian regime.

Economic Security in the Red Sea

The President underscored South Korea’s significance as an economic power reliant on international trade. He stressed the importance of supporting the Yemeni government in deterring threats to shared interests. He noted that the security of the Red Sea and Bab el-Mandeb Strait is a collective responsibility for all nations benefiting from trade through this vital corridor.

Call for International Unity

President Alimi commended the international community’s unity regarding the Yemeni issue. He urged increased pressure on the Houthi militias and their supporters, including endorsing their designation as a foreign terrorist organization. He also called for support for the United Nations inspection mechanism to enforce the arms embargo.

South Korea’s Commitment to Yemen

In response, Ambassador Do reaffirmed South Korea’s support for the Presidential Leadership Council, the Yemeni government, and the aspirations for security, stability, and peace. He emphasized adherence to comprehensive solutions, particularly UN Resolution 2216.

A Legacy of Cooperation

Ambassador Do reviewed the areas of cooperation between the two friendly nations since the establishment of diplomatic relations in August 1985. He highlighted South Korea’s commitment to addressing the needs of the Yemeni people through humanitarian response plans and efforts to alleviate water crises in several Yemeni provinces.

Conclusion

The meeting concluded with the presence of Dr. Yahya Al-Shaibi, Director of the Presidential Office, marking a significant step towards enhancing Yemen-South Korea relations.
