The International Organization for Migration (IOM) has identified the water scarcity issue in Marib as one of the most pressing challenges facing the region. Marib currently hosts the largest number of displaced persons in Yemen, intensifying the need for sustainable water solutions.
In a report released on Sunday, the IOM announced its collaboration with the German government to enhance access to clean water for approximately 118,000 individuals in Marib city. This initiative particularly targets displaced families residing in Al-Jafina camp, the largest gathering of displaced persons in Yemen.
The project involves drilling a new well and connecting it to the city’s main water network. Additionally, the IOM plans to lay pipeline extensions to ensure a sustainable supply of clean water for thousands of families.
Abdul Sattar Iswaif, head of the IOM mission in Yemen, emphasized the critical nature of this project. He stated, “Water is a basic necessity for life. However, many displaced families in Marib face daily struggles to obtain it.” Iswaif highlighted that this initiative represents a significant step towards providing safe and reliable drinking water, which will improve public health and enable families to restore their lives with dignity.
The report concluded by noting that this project will provide a permanent water source for displaced families while alleviating pressure on the city’s existing water network. By addressing the urgent need for clean water, the IOM aims to foster resilience among the displaced population and contribute to their overall well-being.
This initiative underscores the importance of international cooperation in tackling humanitarian crises and ensuring that vulnerable communities receive the support they need.
