A comprehensive government meeting took place in Taiz, led by Minister of Local Administration Engineer Badr Basalama. This significant gathering focused on evaluating reports concerning the catastrophic impacts of recent floods and heavy rains across the province. Among the attendees were Taiz Governor Nabil Shamsan, a variety of government officials, military representatives, security personnel, and members from political parties and civil society organizations.
During the meeting, Minister Basalama revealed that field assessments indicated that the damage caused by the floods has surpassed initial estimates. The severe weather conditions have resulted in over 22 fatalities, with an additional 21 individuals reported missing or injured. Furthermore, hundreds of homes sustained damage, displacing more than 12,000 families. Basalama characterized the situation as a “comprehensive humanitarian, economic, and developmental disaster,” emphasizing the extensive harm inflicted on infrastructure, roads, farms, and vital economic resources.
Minister Basalama underscored the necessity of transitioning from mere reporting to implementing a holistic vision that encompasses a comprehensive recovery program for Taiz. This program should address various affected sectors and aim to remediate human, economic, and environmental damages while proposing sustainable solutions for reconstruction and the restoration of livelihoods. He called for a collaborative development of the program, ensuring that it is professional and inclusive of all relevant stakeholders.
Governor Nabil Shamsan welcomed the committee members, expressing gratitude for their efforts in assessing the damage. He described the aftermath of the floods as a “real disaster” that requires urgent responses and practical action mechanisms beyond simple reporting. Shamsan also highlighted the importance of unifying official and community efforts to effectively address the disaster’s repercussions, perceiving the committee’s visit as a crucial step in supporting local authorities.
In his remarks, Governor Shamsan explained that local authorities acted promptly by forming emergency committees in the districts and conducting field assessments to quantify the damage. Reports from the Director of Public Works and the Director of Social Affairs and Labor confirmed the human, economic, and social impacts of the floods, detailing damage to facilities, closed roads, and the adverse effects on residents in the affected districts.
At the conclusion of the meeting, participants emphasized the necessity for swift action and collaboration among all parties involved to ensure the provision of essential support and recovery from the disaster’s aftermath.
The government’s proactive approach aims to mitigate the severe impacts of the floods in Taiz, with a clear focus on recovery and rebuilding efforts that engage all stakeholders in the process.
