The United States and China are set to engage in their first official dialogue regarding artificial intelligence (AI) safety risks in mid-September. This development comes as global AI capabilities reach a critical turning point. Reuters reported this information from two knowledgeable sources.
This upcoming discussion marks the first of its kind since President Donald Trump began his second term. U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Pessen will lead the American delegation. However, a White House official indicated that no meeting is currently scheduled for mid-September, highlighting the sensitivity of the topic and conflicting signals regarding the arrangements.
Adding to the significance, President Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping will meet on September 24 during a summit in Washington, further emphasizing the importance of this potential dialogue.
One source confirmed that Washington aims to explore mechanisms for monitoring cyber attacks potentially executed by AI agents. The U.S. has proposed that AI laboratories in both countries engage in self-monitoring and information sharing to prevent any possible attacks.
This initiative follows a series of alarming incidents, including:
Washington expresses concern over the potential emergence of a Chinese model rivaling Anthropic’s advanced METHOS, capable of executing sophisticated cyber attacks. In June, a U.S. official accused the Chinese company Moonshot AI of stealing outputs from Anthropic’s FABLE model to develop its K3 model. This alleged theft involved a process called “distillation,” which trains a smaller model using outputs from a larger, more expensive one.
Experts believe that the dialogue between these two superpowers on AI comes at a pivotal moment. The outcomes of this conversation could shape the nature of cooperation or confrontation in the AI sector for decades to come.
