Over 400 former European diplomats and officials have urged the European Union (EU) to take immediate action against what they describe as Israel’s “illegal annexation” in the occupied West Bank. This plea arises in response to the controversial “E1” settlement project, which has drawn increasing concern from international observers.
In an open letter signed by 448 former ministers, ambassadors, and European officials, the signatories emphasized the necessity for the EU and its member states to work collaboratively with partners to deter Israel from continuing its policies that threaten the viability of a contiguous Palestinian state. This collective call reflects a growing apprehension regarding the escalation of Israeli settlement activities, which undermine the prospects for peace in the region.
Approved by Israel in August 2025, the E1 project aims to construct 3,400 settlement units over 12 square kilometers east of Jerusalem. This initiative poses a significant risk of dividing the West Bank into two separate areas, thereby complicating efforts for a political resolution. The letter’s signatories warned that this project would exacerbate tensions and hinder ongoing peace efforts.
Alongside these diplomatic concerns, Israeli forces have conducted extensive demolitions and land clearances of two homes and several facilities in Ramallah and Jerusalem as part of their settlement expansion policy. Furthermore, Israeli troops arrested 18 Palestinians during raids in Ramallah, Nablus, and Hebron, increasing pressure on local populations and signaling a dangerous escalation of violence on the ground.
These simultaneous diplomatic and military actions underscore the urgent need for intervention, particularly with the upcoming EU Foreign Affairs Council meeting scheduled for May 11. The evolving situation demands a coordinated and prompt response from the international community to protect Palestinian rights and ensure regional stability.
