Strengthening U.S.-Yemen Health Cooperation: Minister of Health Meets with U.S. Ambassador

Minister of Health Discusses U.S.-Yemen Health Cooperation

Sana’a, Yemen – Today, Dr. Qassem Bahibeh, Yemen’s Minister of Health and Population, held a significant meeting with Stephen Fagin, the U.S. Ambassador to Yemen. The focus of their discussion was on exploring avenues to enhance bilateral cooperation in the healthcare sector, which is facing numerous challenges.

Current Health Sector Challenges

During the meeting, Minister Bahibeh provided an overview of the current state of Yemen’s health sector, emphasizing its critical challenges. He outlined the ministry’s ongoing initiatives to rehabilitate health centers and hospitals in liberated provinces of the country. The minister acknowledged the pivotal role of U.S. support in various health projects previously funded by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID). These initiatives have had a profound impact on improving and sustaining health services for Yemeni citizens. Minister Bahibeh stressed the importance of identifying viable alternatives to maintain this essential support moving forward.

Need for Sustainable Funding

Minister Bahibeh also addressed the pressing issue of resource scarcity, noting the decline in international support for the health sector. This situation has compelled the ministry to seek sustainable self-funding sources to effectively bridge the gap in meeting the basic healthcare needs of the population. He highlighted the urgency of establishing a stable funding mechanism to ensure the continuity of health services.

U.S. Commitment to Health Initiatives

In response to the minister’s concerns, Ambassador Fagin reaffirmed the United States’ commitment to supporting Yemen’s health sector. He pointed out the ongoing efforts of USAID in implementing various health projects across the country, which have had a notably positive impact on the local population. This meeting underscored the critical importance of international collaboration in addressing Yemen’s pressing health challenges and ensuring the continuity of essential health services for its citizens.
