In London, Dr. Abdullah Al-Alimi, a member of Yemen’s Presidential Leadership Council, met with British MP Tahir Ali, who leads the parliamentary group on Yemen. The meeting took place in the presence of Yemen’s Ambassador to the UK, Dr. Yassin Saeed Noman.
During their discussion, both leaders focused on enhancing bilateral relations between Yemen and the United Kingdom. They addressed the current political, security, and economic situations in Yemen. Additionally, they explored the efforts of the Presidential Leadership Council and the government to promote stability, recovery, and strengthen state institutions.
Dr. Al-Alimi praised the significant role played by the British parliamentary group on Yemen. He emphasized its importance in keeping Yemen’s issues at the forefront of discussions in the House of Commons. This group helps British decision-makers understand the challenges Yemen faces and mobilizes political, humanitarian, and economic support for the Yemeni people and their legitimate institutions.
Dr. Al-Alimi outlined the legitimate government’s ongoing efforts to achieve a fair, comprehensive, and sustainable peace. He highlighted the government’s positive engagement in political initiatives. Contrary to some claims, he clarified that the government did not close Sana’a Airport. Instead, it proposed legal solutions and safe administrative measures to operate flights through Yemenia Airlines, ensuring state sovereignty and citizens’ right to travel smoothly. He noted that the Houthi militias rejected these solutions, continuing to exploit citizens’ suffering and obstruct flight operations, thereby exacerbating the humanitarian crisis.
Dr. Al-Alimi stressed the need for the international community to hold the Houthi militias accountable. He urged them to stop exploiting the people’s suffering and to cease using airport operations for political and military purposes. He reiterated that Yemeni citizens bear the brunt of the militias’ obstinacy and refusal to accept available legal options.
The Presidential Leadership Council member pointed out that the Houthi militias continue to hinder peace efforts. They exploit ceasefire periods to rearm and enhance their military capabilities, escalating threats to security in Yemen and the region. He attributed this to direct support from the Iranian regime, which uses armed militias to destabilize the area and threaten maritime navigation in the Red Sea.
Dr. Al-Alimi called on the British Parliament to maintain its support for Yemen and its legitimate institutions. He urged parliamentary committees and groups to back efforts aimed at achieving peace, stability, and recovery. Strengthening Yemen’s state capabilities will help protect its sovereignty and secure its borders and maritime routes.
In response, MP Tahir Ali reaffirmed the British parliamentary group’s commitment to Yemen. He expressed a desire to enhance communication with Yemeni leaders and support initiatives aimed at achieving peace and stability. Ali emphasized the importance of alleviating humanitarian suffering and strengthening relations between the two friendly nations.
This meeting underscores the ongoing commitment of both Yemen and the UK to work together for a peaceful and stable future.
