Training Workshop on Public Health Capacity Enhancement Kicks Off in Aden

Today, the temporary capital of Aden hosts a training workshop for trainers focused on enhancing core public health capacities at border crossings. The General Administration for Port Health and Quarantine, part of the Primary Health Care Sector, organizes this event in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO) and support from the Pandemic Fund. The workshop brings together 40 professionals from various relevant sectors.

Enhancing Preparedness and Response to Health Risks

This three-day workshop aims to build the capacities of national personnel and empower them to transfer knowledge and skills to workers at border crossings. This initiative will improve readiness and response to health emergencies and strengthen compliance with International Health Regulations (IHR).

Workshop Topics

The workshop includes lectures and practical sessions covering the following topics:

• International Health Regulations and core capacity requirements at points of entry
• Health risk assessment and classification
• General health risks at border crossings
• Group exercises and case studies, followed by specialized training on emergency response plans at border crossings.

Officials’ Statements

Dr. Jamal Al-Mas, Director General of Port Health and Quarantine and National Coordinator for International Health Regulations, emphasized the importance of developing human and technical capacities at border crossings. He described these facilities as the “first line of defense” against cross-border health risks. He noted that the workshop’s outcomes will help prioritize ports and airports for capacity building in line with IHR requirements.

Dr. Noha Mahmoud, Deputy WHO Representative in Yemen and Director of the WHO Office in Aden, reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to supporting the Ministry of Health in enhancing emergency preparedness and response. She stressed that investing in training national personnel is a fundamental pillar for building a resilient health system.

Dr. Fatima Arifi, Regional Office for the Eastern Mediterranean’s Health Officer for Ports, highlighted the strategic importance of enhancing core capacities at points of entry. She pointed out that these facilities play a crucial role in early detection, risk assessment, and implementing measures to curb the spread of diseases with international implications.
