Preparations Underway for Nationwide Drug Price Monitoring Campaign

A meeting held today in the temporary capital of Aden, chaired by Minister of Industry and Trade, Mohammed Al-Ashwal, focused on preparations for a comprehensive monitoring campaign. This initiative will coordinate efforts with the Ministry of Public Health and Population, as well as the Higher Authority for Medicines and Medical Supplies. The campaign aims to monitor drug prices in the market, enforce price disclosure by traders and pharmacies, and ensure prices decrease in line with the improving exchange rate of the Yemeni rial.

Key Participants and Campaign Launch Date

The meeting included key figures such as Dr. Sumaya Al-Qabati, Deputy Attorney for Industry and Trade, Rashid Hazib, Deputy Minister for Business Services, and Dr. Ali Abdullah, Director of Monitoring at the Higher Authority for Medicines. Minister Al-Ashwal announced that the campaign will commence tomorrow, August 12, 2025. It will involve inspectors from both ministries to ensure pharmacies and importers comply with approved pricing, with the presence of the Industry and Trade Attorney. He emphasized the need for legal action against violators to guarantee fair drug prices for citizens.

Legal Actions Against Price Violators

Dr. Sumaya Al-Qabati reiterated that the monitoring campaign aims to take legal measures against pharmacies and pharmaceutical companies that continue to sell drugs at inflated prices. She highlighted the importance of a national sense of responsibility and the need to consider the living conditions faced by the country.

Collaborative Efforts for Price Regulation

Dr. Ali Abdullah, Director of Monitoring at the Higher Authority for Medicines, confirmed the collaborative efforts between the Ministry of Industry and Trade, health offices, and the Higher Authority for Medicines to regulate drug prices in pharmacies. He stressed the necessity for prices to decrease in tandem with the improved exchange rate of the Yemeni rial, while also mandating traders and pharmacies to display prices transparently to the public.

This initiative aims to ensure that citizens have access to affordable medications, reflecting a commitment to public health and economic stability in Yemen.
