Yemen Seeks Enhanced Cooperation with UNESCO in Education and Heritage Preservation

Strengthening Ties for Sustainable Development

In a significant move towards bolstering sustainable development, Yemen’s Prime Minister, Dr. Ahmed Awad bin Mubarak, has expressed the country’s keen interest in expanding its collaboration with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). This ambitious initiative aims to cover various sectors, including education support, heritage site preservation, and human capacity building, among other areas of mutual cooperation.

The announcement came during a meeting held on Tuesday in Doha, Qatar, where the Prime Minister welcomed a UNESCO delegation led by Salah Khaled, the Director of the Regional Office for the Gulf States and Yemen. The discussions focused on UNESCO’s sectoral plan and its upcoming priorities in Yemen, aiming to align with the government’s priority areas through strategic coordination.

A Collaborative Path Forward

The meeting delved into ways to solidify the partnership between Yemen and UNESCO. It highlighted the importance of building collaborations to enhance sustainable development across culture, heritage, and education sectors. Moreover, ongoing coordination efforts to organize an international conference to support education in Yemen were discussed. The talks also covered developing strategies for higher and technical education and plans to protect World Heritage sites from climate change impacts.

Prime Minister Mubarak appreciated UNESCO’s efforts and initiatives in Yemen, expressing hope for increased cooperation in vocational training for professionals and the development of the education sector. He pointed out the role of the Academic Accreditation Council and the Supreme Medical Council in adopting professional standards to improve performance, emphasizing UNESCO’s potential support in these endeavors.

Continued Partnership

Salah Khaled, UNESCO’s Regional Office Director, reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to ongoing collaboration with the Yemeni government. This partnership aims to identify priorities and develop effective plans for joint initiatives.

The meeting was attended by key figures, including the Minister of Education, Tariq Al Akbari, Yemen’s Ambassador to Qatar, Rajeh Badi, and the Prime Minister’s Advisor, Ambassador Mujeeb Osman, highlighting the high level of engagement and commitment to this collaborative effort.

This step marks a significant milestone in Yemen’s efforts to enhance its educational infrastructure and preserve its rich cultural heritage, with UNESCO playing a pivotal role in supporting these critical initiatives.
