Minister Discusses Migrant Conditions in Aden

Today, Abdulrahman Sheikh, the Minister of State and Governor of Aden, met with Othman Albalbisi, the Regional Director of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) for the Middle East and North Africa, and Abd Al-Sattar Aisyouf, the Head of the IOM Mission in Yemen. The meeting focused on collaborative efforts to address the conditions of migrants in Aden.

Humanitarian Situation of Migrants

During the meeting, participants reviewed the humanitarian conditions of migrants residing in camps throughout Aden. They highlighted the challenges faced by local authorities in managing these camps. The discussion also covered IOM’s interventions in education and the voluntary return program for undocumented migrants. Additionally, they explored ways to enhance coordination and integration between the two parties to improve humanitarian responses and service levels, particularly in health care.

Challenges in Aden

Governor Sheikh addressed the increasing challenges in Aden due to the rising number of undocumented migrants from the Horn of Africa. He specifically noted the strain on local services and praised the interventions provided by IOM and other stakeholders in this area.

Commitment to Organize Migrant Camps

The governor emphasized the local authority’s commitment to organizing the conditions of camps for undocumented migrants. He stressed the need to implement measures that reduce chaos and accelerate voluntary return programs. Sheikh called for expanding these initiatives and intensifying IOM’s support to alleviate migrant suffering while balancing humanitarian needs with stability requirements in Aden.

IOM’s Continued Support

In response, IOM officials expressed their appreciation for the ongoing collaboration with local authorities in Aden. They reaffirmed their commitment to supporting humanitarian response programs and implementing new educational interventions. This includes the rehabilitation and maintenance of seven additional schools across various districts. IOM aims to strengthen partnerships with relevant stakeholders to improve the conditions for both migrants and the host community.

Conclusion

The meeting underscored the importance of coordinated efforts to address the complex challenges facing migrants in Aden. Both the local government and IOM remain dedicated to enhancing the living conditions of migrants while ensuring stability in the region.
