Leadership Meeting in Aden Addresses Judicial Challenges

Aden, Yemen – Today, members of the Presidential Leadership Council, Major General Aidarus al-Zubaidi and Abdulrahman al-Mahrimi, met with the Chief Justice of the Supreme Judicial Council, Judge Mohsen Yahya Talib, and other council members in the temporary capital of Aden.

Key Discussions on Judicial Issues

The meeting included prominent judicial figures such as the President of the Supreme Court, Judge Ali La’osh, the Attorney General, Judge Qaher Mustafa, and the Secretary-General of the Supreme Judicial Council, Judge Suhail Hamza. They discussed the challenges facing the judiciary, which recently led to a strike by judges and the closure of courts in Aden. This disruption has significantly affected citizens’ access to justice.

Urgent Call to Reopen Courts

Major General al-Zubaidi emphasized the urgent need to reopen all courts and resume their operations. He stated that the ongoing closure of courts is unacceptable given the current circumstances in the country. He insisted that any demands from the Judges’ Club must be addressed within a legal and institutional framework, adhering to existing laws and judicial procedures.

Judicial Independence and Responsibilities

Al-Zubaidi highlighted the importance of the Supreme Judicial Council as a vital component supporting the executive authority. He affirmed that the council enjoys complete independence in appointing and dismissing judges, as well as in judicial transfers that serve the public interest and enhance the judicial system’s performance.

Support for Judicial Reforms

The council member urged the judiciary to play an active role in supporting the efforts of the Resources Committee and the Cabinet in implementing financial and administrative reforms. He called for the judiciary’s involvement in holding accountable those involved in corruption and mismanagement of public funds and currency exchange rates, leveraging its authority to enforce the law.

Commitment to Judicial Integrity

Al-Zubaidi reiterated the state’s commitment to supporting judicial personnel and addressing their legitimate demands. He stressed the importance of creating a safe and stable environment that enables judges to perform their duties with integrity and independence, thereby enhancing public trust in the judicial institution.

Appreciation from Judicial Leaders

In response, the Chief Justice and council members expressed their gratitude to Major General al-Zubaidi and al-Mahrimi for their ongoing support and attention to judicial affairs. They affirmed their readiness to resume court and prosecution operations, as well as their commitment to supporting financial and administrative reforms to establish the foundations of a law-based state.

The meeting marks a significant step towards resolving the ongoing judicial crisis and restoring the functionality of the courts in Aden.
