Dr. Ahmed Obaid Bin Daghr, the Chairman of the Shura Council, met today with Hans Grundberg, the Special Envoy of the United Nations Secretary-General to Yemen. They discussed the latest developments in the national situation, the ongoing Yemeni crisis, and efforts to end the Houthi coup and restore state institutions. This meeting comes amid the continued military escalation by Houthi militias across several fronts, raising concerns about security in Yemen and the broader region.
During the meeting, Dr. Bin Daghr briefed the UN envoy on the recent military escalation by the Houthis, particularly in the besieged province of Taiz and along the western coast. He highlighted the attacks and violations against civilians that have occurred in recent weeks. Dr. Bin Daghr emphasized that the recent Houthi escalation, which includes targeting civilian facilities in the sister Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the civilian airports of Aden and Al-Riyan, poses a serious threat to security and stability. He condemned these actions as violations of international laws and norms.
The Chairman of the Shura Council stressed the urgent need to halt these attacks, lift the siege on Taiz, alleviate the suffering of its residents, and ensure the delivery of humanitarian aid. He also called for the protection of civilians and civilian infrastructure, praising the heroic resilience of the people in the province.
Dr. Bin Daghr held the Houthi militia accountable for the continuation of the war in Yemen and the resulting humanitarian tragedies that threaten regional security and stability. He condemned Iranian policies that support the Houthis and warned of the dangers posed to international navigation in the Red Sea and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait.
He urged the international community and the United Nations to fulfill their responsibilities by taking action to stop Houthi attacks, protect civilian facilities, and secure maritime routes. Dr. Bin Daghr called for decisive measures to compel the militia to cease its escalation and violations and to comply with international legitimacy.
Dr. Bin Daghr affirmed that the “Fajr Yemen” operation will continue until the Houthi militias lay down their arms, cease killing civilians, respect their rights, and agree to return to the negotiating table based on the agreed-upon national, regional, and international references.
He reiterated that the stance of the Presidential Leadership Council, led by Dr. Rashad Mohammed Al-Alimi, will remain firm against Houthi aggression and rebellion as long as the attacks and violations persist. Dr. Bin Daghr asserted that achieving a just and sustainable peace requires ending the coup and halting the war and violations.
Dr. Bin Daghr also praised the fraternal role of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in supporting Yemen and its legitimate leadership, as well as assisting the Yemeni people politically, humanitarianly, and developmentally. He emphasized the importance of continuing this support in the face of current challenges.
For his part, the UN envoy reviewed the efforts of the United Nations to advance the political process in Yemen. He confirmed ongoing work with various parties to reach solutions that contribute to ending the crisis and alleviating humanitarian suffering, aiming to fulfill the aspirations of Yemenis for security and stability.
The meeting included the advisor to the Chairman of the Presidential Leadership Council, Dr. Mohammed Al-Amari, and Shura Council members Alawi Al-Basha Bin Zaba, Sheikh Saleh Aishan, and Saad Bin Haidra.
