The Yemeni Network for Rights and Freedoms has issued a stark warning about an impending humanitarian disaster in Marib. This region currently shelters over two million displaced individuals. The warning comes as most humanitarian projects have halted and numerous international organizations have withdrawn their operations.
In a statement received by the Yemeni News Agency (Saba), the network highlighted severe violations perpetrated by Houthi militias against humanitarian workers. These violations include arbitrary detention, harassment of employees, imposition of restrictions, extortion, and raids on offices. As a result, approximately 90% of relief activities have ceased, leaving thousands of families facing an uncertain future amid food insecurity and a lack of health, water, and shelter services.
The network’s statement emphasized that these actions have led to a significant reduction in food supplies and emergency aid. Programs providing cash support and essential services have also come to a standstill, contributing to rising rates of malnutrition among children and women. Furthermore, the prosecution and detention of United Nations and international organization staff have triggered a widespread withdrawal, driven by concerns for worker safety. This situation has nearly paralyzed humanitarian operations in the area.
The network asserted that these violations represent a flagrant breach of international humanitarian law, which guarantees the freedom to conduct humanitarian work and prohibits its obstruction or politicization. The manipulation of aid for political extortion undermines international trust and threatens to halt additional life-saving programs.
The network has made several urgent appeals:
In conclusion, the network stressed that civilian lives should not become pawns in political or military conflicts. It warned that the ongoing disruption of humanitarian efforts could lead to an unprecedented catastrophe in Yemen.
