The Transport Minister urges traders, importers, companies, and shipping lines to resume operations at liberated ports.

Dr. Abdul Salam Hamid, Yemen’s Minister of Transport, has called on traders, importers, and shipping companies to resume operations at Aden Port and other liberated ports. He emphasized the ports’ technical capabilities and capacity to provide high-quality maritime services.

Commitment to Facilitate Trade

In a statement to the Yemeni News Agency (Saba), Minister Hamid assured that the Ministry of Transport would offer all necessary support to ease any challenges faced by businesses. He highlighted the recent developments affecting the ports of Hodeidah, noting that these events have created a critical situation for commercial activity and shipping operations. The Minister announced that the liberated ports stand ready to welcome all shipping lines and import companies, ensuring secure and efficient supply chains for both commercial and humanitarian aid to areas under Houthi control.

Impact of Houthi Actions on Maritime Trade

Minister Hamid pointed out that the conflict in the Red Sea, ignited by Houthi militia targeting international shipping routes to serve Iranian interests, has significantly disrupted maritime traffic. This situation has led to a dramatic increase in insurance rates and shipping costs, which in turn has raised the prices of goods and services, adversely affecting the living standards of the Yemeni population.

Call for International Support

The Minister urged the international community to intervene and halt the Houthi militia’s exploitation of traders and importers through checkpoints in Aden and other liberated areas. He criticized the militia for imposing 100% customs and tax rates, which exacerbate the suffering of the Yemeni people, who are already grappling with poverty and hunger due to the oppressive actions of the Iran-backed Houthi group.

Dr. Hamid’s appeal underscores the urgent need for a collaborative effort to restore normalcy in Yemen’s maritime trade and alleviate the humanitarian crisis facing its citizens. The Minister’s commitment to facilitating trade through liberated ports aims to enhance economic stability and improve the quality of life for the Yemeni people.
