The Saudi Program for the Reconstruction of Yemen has officially assumed control of the Electricity Corporation in Socotra Island. This transition follows the management previously held by the Emirati company Eastern Triangle. The move aims to strengthen the management of essential services across the archipelago.
Local sources reported that the Saudi program took over the Hadibo Power Generation Station on Thursday. This handover is part of broader arrangements that include oversight of several vital facilities in the region.
This development occurred just hours after Saudi-backed security forces took control of Hadibo Hospital, formerly known as Khalifa Hospital. This takeover followed the announcement from the Emirati company NMC that it would cease operations and withdraw its staff from the facility.
Rafat Al-Thaqali, the Governor of Socotra, emphasized that government efforts continue to support the sectors of health, electricity, education, and water. The Saudi Program for Development and Reconstruction of Yemen oversees these initiatives, which include providing fuel supplies to ensure service stability. Al-Thaqali reassured citizens that their needs remain a top priority.
In recent years, Abu Dhabi established significant influence over the island through its military and security presence. The Emirati government utilized affiliated companies to gain control over critical sectors, including water, electricity, fuel, gas, and tourism.
The Saudi program’s recent actions mark a pivotal shift in the management of essential services in Socotra, aiming to enhance local governance and improve the quality of life for residents.
