Death Toll from Devastating Earthquakes in Venezuela Exceeds 4,700

On June 24, Venezuela experienced two catastrophic earthquakes that have resulted in over 4,700 fatalities. Official reports released on Monday indicate that approximately 17,000 individuals sustained injuries. Jorge Rodriguez, the President of the National Assembly, confirmed that at least 4,734 people have died, while 16,740 others have been injured. Fortunately, most of the injured have since left hospitals after receiving treatment.

Details of the Earthquakes

The earthquakes struck Caracas and the neighboring La Guaira state just 39 seconds apart, registering magnitudes of 7.2 and 7.5. The tremors caused widespread destruction, collapsing numerous residential complexes into piles of rubble. This disaster ranks among the worst in modern Venezuelan history.

Missing Persons and the Impact of the Disaster

The United Nations estimates that around 50,000 individuals remain unaccounted for since the earthquakes occurred. The collapse of hundreds of buildings highlights the scale of the catastrophe affecting the nation. Search and rescue operations continue, but responders face significant challenges given the prevailing conditions.

Government and International Response

The Venezuelan government is actively working to support those affected by the earthquakes. Authorities have allocated additional resources to address the needs of citizens. Furthermore, the country is expected to receive international humanitarian aid to cope with the disaster’s aftermath. Global solidarity could play a crucial role in accelerating relief and recovery efforts.
