Two children sustained severe injuries from a landmine explosion left by Houthi militants in the Tyab area of the Dhay Naim district in Al-Bayda Governorate. According to the Monitoring Center for Rights and Development, the explosion occurred while the children were herding sheep. Khalid Jabbel Al-Jaafari, 16, suffered serious physical deformities that resulted in permanent disability. Meanwhile, 17-year-old Salem Mohammed Al-Jaafari also sustained critical injuries.
This incident represents a blatant violation of international humanitarian law. The use of landmines by the Houthis clearly breaches the Anti-Personnel Mine Ban Convention. Furthermore, this act qualifies as a war crime, deliberately targeting civilian children. Such actions demand a strong response from the international community.
The Monitoring Center urges the United Nations and the global community to pressure the Houthi militia to cease landmine planting and to provide maps of minefields in Al-Bayda and other provinces. This pressure is essential to prevent further casualties, especially among children who are the most vulnerable to these dangers.
The center also calls on humanitarian and medical organizations to provide immediate medical care and psychological support for the injured children. The situation necessitates intensified efforts from demining teams in the Tyab area and surrounding villages to ensure civilian safety and protect them from the risks posed by remaining landmines.
