Minister of Water and Environment Reviews Pump Station Rehabilitation Project in Aden

A Collaborative Effort with the World Bank

Today, Minister of Water and Environment, Engineer Tawfiq Al-Sharjabi, along with a delegation from the World Bank, led by Vice President for the Middle East, North Africa, Afghanistan, and Pakistan, Othman Diwan, and the World Bank’s Country Director for Yemen, Dina Abu Ghaida, visited the trial operation of the rehabilitation project for the pump station in the Sirah District. They also assessed the replacement of the transmission line from the station to the Khormaksar District.

Project Overview and Funding

This initiative is part of the Emergency Integrated Urban Services Project in Yemen (Phase II), with a budget of $1,989,000. The World Bank funds this project through the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS).

Technical Details of the Project

During the visit, Minister Al-Sharjabi and the delegation received a detailed briefing from the General Director of the Local Water and Sanitation Corporation in Aden, Engineer Mohammed Bakhebeira. The project involves the supply and installation of 3,500 meters of polyethylene pipes, extending from the Sirah sewage station to the connection point in Khormaksar. Additionally, it includes the restoration and rehabilitation of the main sewage pump in the Sirah District, covering civil, architectural, mechanical, and electrical works.

Importance of International Support

Minister Al-Sharjabi emphasized the significance of World Bank-funded projects in enhancing the water and sanitation sectors. He highlighted the need for sustainable services for citizens amid the current challenges facing the country. The Minister praised the partnership between the Yemeni government and the World Bank, recognizing it as a vital contributor to development efforts, especially in water and sanitation.

World Bank’s Commitment to Vital Projects

In response, the World Bank delegation reaffirmed its commitment to supporting such essential projects. They acknowledged the importance of improving basic services in the water and sanitation sectors to meet developmental needs.

This collaboration marks a significant step toward enhancing public health and infrastructure in Yemen, showcasing the ongoing efforts to address critical service gaps in the region.
