The Minister of Social Affairs and Labor stated that Houthi militias have caused the currency collapse and economic decline.

Economic Crisis Triggered by Houthi Militias, Says Minister

Dr. Mohammed Al-Zahouri, the Minister of Social Affairs and Labor, addressed the severe economic challenges facing Yemen due to the ongoing conflict instigated by Houthi militias. He emphasized that the Iranian-backed group’s actions have led to a collapse of the national currency and a significant decline in its purchasing power. This economic downturn has adversely affected citizens’ lives, resulting in a near-total lack of essential services, particularly electricity, during an exceptionally hot summer.

Meeting with Friedrich Ebert Foundation Officials

This statement came during a meeting in the temporary capital of Aden with Richard Probst, the Director for the Middle East and North Africa at the Friedrich Ebert Foundation, along with Konstantin Grund, the Foundation’s Director in Yemen, Senior Program Manager Mahmoud Qiah, and Program Manager Mayada Al-Baydani.

Achievements Amidst Challenges

During the meeting, Minister Al-Zahouri highlighted the ministry’s key achievements despite facing numerous challenges and limited resources. Notable accomplishments include the development of the National Social Protection Strategy (2025–2030), the National Strategy for the Elderly, the Child Protection Strategy, and the National Action Plan for Women, Peace, and Security.

Upcoming Initiatives and Support Requests

The minister also announced plans to launch an electronic platform for local and international organizations soon. He called for increased support to complete ongoing programs and future plans.

Impact of Houthi Attacks on Oil Exports

Al-Zahouri pointed out that Houthi threats and attacks on ports have halted oil and gas exports, severely limiting the government’s ability to meet its financial obligations.

Commitment to Collaboration

In response, Probst praised the Ministry of Social Affairs and Labor for its efforts to promote justice, democracy, and the freedom of trade unions. He reaffirmed the Friedrich Ebert Foundation’s commitment to fully cooperate with the ministry in its initiatives.

This meeting underscores the urgent need for international support and collaboration to address Yemen’s pressing economic and social challenges.
