Airstrike Hits Sanaa International Airport
Yemenia Airlines announced today from its temporary headquarters in Aden that an airstrike targeting Sanaa International Airport resulted in the destruction of three of its aircraft. The airline attributed the attack to the Houthi militia, which is backed by the Iranian regime, using civilian facilities for military purposes.
Statement from Yemenia Airlines
In a statement received by the Yemeni News Agency (Saba), Yemenia expressed deep regret over the loss of three aircraft: an A320-AFA, an A320-AFC, and an A330-AFE. These planes had been grounded at Sanaa Airport since July 2024, when the Houthis seized them while they were engaged in humanitarian missions. The aircraft were transporting Yemeni pilgrims to and from Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
Impact on Humanitarian Efforts
Yemenia Airlines emphasized that the destruction of these aircraft significantly exacerbates the challenges faced by the national carrier, the only airline operating in Yemen. The loss represents a substantial setback, as these planes played a crucial role in alleviating the humanitarian crisis by providing international transport services between Yemen and other countries. The airline holds the Houthi militia fully responsible for the damages and losses incurred.
Repeated Warnings Ignored
The airline reiterated that it had repeatedly warned against the continued hijacking of its aircraft by the militia. Yemenia had communicated through official channels, urging the release of the seized planes and requesting permission for them to depart to either Aden Airport or another safe international airport. Unfortunately, these requests met with obstinacy and refusal.
The ongoing conflict in Yemen continues to impact civilian infrastructure and humanitarian efforts. Yemenia Airlines remains committed to its mission of serving the Yemeni people, despite the significant challenges posed by the current situation.
