Minister Launches National Food Security Strategy Workshop in Aden

A Collaborative Effort for Food Security

Today, in the temporary capital of Aden, Minister of Agriculture, Irrigation, and Fisheries, Salem Al-Saqtri, inaugurated a consultative workshop focused on discussing the draft of the National Food Security Strategy. This initiative receives technical support from the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations. The workshop includes participation from the Ministry of Planning and International Cooperation, alongside various experts and relevant stakeholders.

Addressing Yemen’s Food Security Challenges

Minister Al-Saqtri emphasized that the strategy serves as a crucial reference document for assessing the challenges Yemen faces in food security and agriculture. He noted that the strategy will be presented at the upcoming International Food Security Conference, scheduled for October at the General Secretariat of the Gulf Cooperation Council. This event will gather international partners and donor agencies.

Data-Driven Approach to Strategy Development

The Minister explained that the preparation of this document relies on accurate data and credible scientific references. It aligns with other national strategies related to agriculture, fisheries, and investment plans, including the Food Security Enhancement Plan for 2024-2027 and the National Animal Health Strategy. He praised the active role of the FAO office in Yemen for supporting the ministry’s efforts and providing technical expertise to enrich the strategy’s content.

Future Strategies and Collaborative Efforts

Al-Saqtri also highlighted the ministry’s commitment to completing its sectoral strategies. These include the National Plant Health Strategy, strategies for combating plant pests and diseases, and the National Fisheries Strategy. He called for enhanced collaboration among various ministries and sectors, urging the involvement of experts and researchers in drafting the document. This approach aims to create a robust strategy capable of attracting international funding and effectively addressing food security challenges while promoting sustainable agricultural and fisheries development.
