Minister of Interior Discusses Security Cooperation with Japanese Officials

In a significant meeting held today in the temporary capital of Aden, Minister of Interior Major General Ibrahim Haidan engaged with Japan’s Ambassador to Yemen, Yoichi Nakashima, and the Director of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), Yu Ebisawa. The discussions focused on enhancing joint cooperation in the security sector.

Acknowledging Japanese Support

During the meeting, which included the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Interior for Civil Services, Major General Abdul Majid Al-Amari, Minister Haidan praised the Japanese government’s ongoing support for the Ministry of Interior and the Coast Guard. He expressed gratitude for Japan’s contributions to the Yemeni government’s efforts aimed at bolstering security and stability.

Achievements and Future Goals

Minister Haidan highlighted the key achievements of the Ministry of Interior and security forces in liberated provinces. He emphasized the ongoing efforts to improve security operations and institutional development. The Minister expressed a strong desire to expand collaboration with Japan, particularly in the areas of forensic science, training, and capacity building for security agencies.

Addressing Challenges in Coast Guard Operations

The Minister also addressed corrective measures to tackle shortcomings in the Coast Guard’s performance over the past period. He reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to enhancing operational and administrative capabilities, enabling the Coast Guard to effectively protect coastal areas, combat smuggling, and address organized crime.

Continued Japanese Commitment

In response, Ambassador Nakashima reaffirmed Japan’s commitment to supporting Yemen and strengthening cooperation with the Ministry of Interior. He highlighted the importance of protecting mutual interests between the two friendly nations. The Ambassador commended the Ministry’s efforts in implementing the biometric identity card project, which represents a significant advancement in documentation and identity verification.

JICA’s Role in Development

Director Yu Ebisawa provided an overview of the programs and projects JICA is implementing in Yemen. He discussed opportunities for collaboration that would benefit the Ministry of Interior in enhancing its institutional framework and improving technical and security capabilities.

This meeting marks a crucial step in fostering international partnerships aimed at strengthening Yemen’s security landscape.
