Government Meeting Assesses Flood Damage in Taiz

A comprehensive government meeting took place in Taiz, led by Minister of Local Administration Engineer Badr Basalama. The gathering focused on evaluating reports concerning the catastrophic impacts of recent floods and heavy rains across the province. Attendees included Taiz Governor Nabil Shamsan, various government officials, military representatives, security personnel, as well as members from political parties and civil society organizations.

Damage Exceeds Initial Estimates

During the meeting, Minister Basalama highlighted that field assessments revealed damage surpassing initial estimates. The floods have resulted in over 22 fatalities, with 21 individuals missing or injured. Additionally, hundreds of homes suffered damage, displacing more than 12,000 families. Basalama emphasized the extensive harm to infrastructure, roads, farms, and economic resources, describing the situation as a “comprehensive humanitarian, economic, and developmental disaster.”

Moving Towards Comprehensive Recovery

Minister Basalama stressed the need to shift from mere reporting to adopting a holistic vision that includes a comprehensive recovery program for Taiz. This program should address various affected sectors and tackle human, economic, and environmental damages while proposing sustainable solutions for reconstruction and restoring livelihoods. He called for the program’s development to be professional and inclusive, involving all relevant stakeholders.

Governor Nabil Shamsan welcomed the committee members, appreciating their efforts in assessing the damage. He described the aftermath of the floods as a “real disaster” necessitating urgent responses and practical action mechanisms beyond simple reporting. Shamsan also underscored the importance of unifying official and community efforts to address the disaster’s repercussions, viewing the committee’s visit as a crucial step in supporting local authorities.

Local Authority Efforts to Address the Disaster

Governor Shamsan explained that local authorities acted promptly by forming emergency committees in the districts and executing field assessments to quantify the damage. Reports from the Director of Public Works and the Director of Social Affairs and Labor confirmed the human, economic, and social impacts, detailing damage to facilities, closed roads, and the disaster’s effects on residents in the affected districts.

At the meeting’s conclusion, participants emphasized the necessity for swift action and collaboration among all involved parties to ensure the provision of essential support and recovery from the disaster’s aftermath.
