Virtual Meeting Addresses Military Tensions

Yemen’s Foreign Minister, Dr. Afrah Al-Zuba, held a virtual meeting with Hans Grundberg, the UN Special Envoy for Yemen. They discussed the recent military escalation by the Houthi militia, which has resulted in civilian and military casualties, as well as threats to regional security and international navigation.

Details of Houthi Attacks Revealed

During the meeting, Minister Al-Zuba provided details about Houthi attacks involving ballistic missiles and suicide drones. These assaults targeted military camps and units in Marib and Hadramout, leading to the deaths of 17 soldiers and officers, with additional injuries reported. The attacks also struck residential areas and displacement camps in Marib, resulting in the deaths of two civilians and injuries to 14 others, according to initial reports.

Escalation and Regional Threats

Al-Zuba emphasized that these attacks represent a unilateral escalation by the Houthis. She clarified that they do not respond to any government military actions but instead target armed forces, civilians, and displaced persons. This escalation undermines efforts for de-escalation and risks dragging Yemen into broader regional conflicts. Furthermore, she noted that the attacks extended to civilian sites in Najran, injuring 11 civilians, while the Houthis continue to threaten international navigation in the Red Sea, Bab al-Mandab, and the Gulf of Aden.

Call for International Responsibility

The Foreign Minister stressed the need for the United Nations and the international community to take a clear stance. She urged them to hold the militia accountable for its actions and to prevent further undermining of de-escalation efforts.

In response, Grundberg reiterated his commitment to reducing tensions and preventing Yemen from sliding into wider confrontations. He expressed his dedication to resuming the political process and advancing peace efforts in the region.
