Yemeni Foreign Minister Dr. Afrah Al-Zuba, today met with British Minister of State for the Middle East and North Africa, Stephen Doughty, on the sidelines of the Manama Dialogue 2026. They discussed the bilateral relations between the two friendly countries, the latest developments in Yemen and the region, and ways to enhance British and international support for the Yemeni government and state institutions.
During the meeting, the minister reviewed the ongoing humanitarian and military situation, particularly highlighting the continued blockade imposed by the Iranian-backed Houthi militia on the city of Taiz. This blockade has exacerbated the humanitarian crisis and deteriorated essential services.
Al-Zuba also addressed the violations faced by United Nations staff and international organizations held by the Houthi militia. She noted the death of UN employee Mohammed Al-Shami, who died after more than two years of captivity.
Al-Zuba emphasized that the Yemeni government remains committed to fulfilling its responsibilities despite current challenges. She stressed the importance of enhancing international support for state institutions to enable them to perform their roles effectively.
The discussion also covered bilateral cooperation in security and maritime sectors. This includes building the capacities of the Coast Guard and protecting vital facilities, as well as intensifying international efforts to combat the sources of armament for the Houthi militia and limit the flow of weapons to them.
Both sides exchanged views on regional developments, tensions related to Iran, and the risks of escalating conflicts and their implications for regional security and stability. The Foreign Minister asserted that Iranian interventions and support for armed groups have fueled conflicts and undermined regional stability.
For his part, the British minister reaffirmed his country’s support for the Yemeni government and state institutions. He emphasized the importance of ongoing information exchange and coordination between the two countries, as well as collaboration with international partners to support efforts aimed at achieving security and stability in Yemen.
The meeting also included the presence of Yemen’s Ambassador to the Kingdom of Bahrain, Dr. Ali Al-Ahmadi.
