North Korea has announced the successful testing of cluster munitions designed for use with tactical ballistic missiles. The country confirmed its intention to deploy various types of these munitions by the end of this year.
The Korean Central News Agency reported that the missile administration conducted the test on Saturday to evaluate the suitability of the cluster warhead for combat conditions and its destructive effectiveness. This assessment aims to prepare for its integration into tactical ballistic missiles.
General Kim Jong-sik, a member of the Central Military Commission of the Workers’ Party of Korea and the first deputy director of the party’s central committee, oversaw the testing process. The agency highlighted that research institutes under the missile administration indicated that the second standard model of the cluster warhead possesses high destructive capability, covering a target area of approximately 12 to 13 hectares.
The report also mentioned that cluster warheads are classified into four categories based on their intended use. Military units will have the opportunity to select appropriate types according to operational tasks and the nature of their targets throughout this year.
In April, North Korea announced the testing of cluster munitions mounted on the tactical ballistic missile “Hwasong-11 Ra,” as part of an evaluation of the destructive power of various types of warheads.
